Eligibility

I am a surviving spouse of a military service member, am I eligible?

Yes, unremarried surviving spouses are eligible.

I am a former spouse of a military service member (divorced), am I eligible?

Yes, provided you and your former spouse are/were AFI members --- you are eligible.

What does “Once a member always a member” mean?

If you have ever had insurance with AFI then you are always eligible to become an AFI member again, no matter your current military or DoD status.

My child is currently serving in the military, am I eligible?

No, our eligibility does not extend to the parents of military personnel.

Are Department of Defense contractors eligible?

No, currently our membership is only extended to Department of Defense employees.

Do you insure non-U.S. military members?

No, our membership is only for U.S. Military branches (Army, Air Force, Coast Guard, Marine, and Navy) and to the Public Health Service and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

My father/mother served in the military, am I eligible?

If your father/mother was insured with AFI then you are eligible.  You can call and talk to a representive to find out if you're eligible, 800-495-8234.
